Established in 1940 by the Nazis during WW II, Auschwitz was an enormous labour camp and death factory. The name "Auschwitz" comes from the Polish word "Oświęcim", the name of the Polish city near which the camp was built. The complex consist of two main camps: Auschwitz I – the administrative centre; and Auschwitz II (Birkenau) – the extermination camp. The number of people exterminated at the camp has been estimated to be between 1.1 – 1.6 million. All over the world, Auschwitz is seen as a symbol of terror, genocide and the holocaust.
